Phillip Squire, identified in the family material as “Corp.,” was born in England on 24 November 1642. He was the son of Thomas Squire and Jane Jackson.

About 1665, Phillip married Rachel Ruggles, who was of Braintree, Massachusetts. The family material states that he had children and land interests in America.

Phillip entered military service and reportedly saw combat during King Philip’s War. He was said to have held the rank of corporal. The family notes specifically associate him with the Turner Falls Fight, described there as a controversial action in which hundreds of Indians were killed.

Phillip and Rachel had a daughter, Grizzell Squire. Grizzell married James Wheeler. Through their daughter Nancy Wheeler and subsequent generations, Phillip Squire is identified as the ninth great-grandfather in Barbara’s family branch.

Phillip died in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, in February 1693. The supplied life dates give his death as 28 February 1693, while the original family-tree notes give 29 February 1693. He was buried in King’s Chapel Burying Ground in Boston.

Historical context

King Philip’s War was the conflict named in the family material as the war in which Phillip Squire served. The supplied notes also connect him with the Turner Falls Fight and characterize that event as controversial.
