Research in progress

John Marshall Holladay, also recorded as John Holladay Sr., was identified in family-tree material as a South Carolina Revolutionary War soldier and DAR Patriot Ancestor A056551. He was living in the Camden District/Clarendon area of South Carolina by the Revolutionary era and died in Sumter District in 1817 according to the date supplied and the recording of his will.

John Marshall Holladay, also called John Holladay Sr. in his will, is recorded with a birth date of 23 December 1745. His birthplace is given inconsistently as King William County, Virginia, or Craven County, South Carolina. Separate Revolutionary War material gives his birth as circa 1740 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

He was associated with South Carolina during the Revolutionary period. The supplied material identifies him as a soldier from South Carolina in the 4th Regiment and as a Patriot of the American Revolution, DAR Ancestor A056551. A residence entry places him in colonial South Carolina in 1775, and another identifies the Camden District, South Carolina. Later residence entries place him in Clarendon, South Carolina, in 1800 and 1810.

John's wife was Susannah, named as Susanah in his will. On 12 September 1812, John Holladay Sr. made his last will in Sumter District, South Carolina. He commended his soul to God, directed that his body receive decent Christian burial at his executor's discretion, and disposed of his estate. He gave Susannah, for her lifetime, the enslaved people Sam and Janey, his household furniture, plantation tools, and his land. After her death, these were to pass to their son James. James was also asked to care for his mother and to address the settlement of a bond or debt in Charleston.

The will named children or family members including James Holladay, Susannah, Agness, William, Hariot, Mary Spears, and John Holladay Jr. He left Prince to daughter Susannah; Bob to daughter Agness; Abram to son William; and Pheoby and Mary to daughter Hariot. He directed that Bob, left to Agness, should go to her daughter Elizabeth Chester when Elizabeth married. Mary Spears and John Holladay Jr. were to divide three dollars equally. John appointed his son James Holladay as sole executor. The will was witnessed by J. Ridgill, J.P., L. B. Gibson, and Richd. Ridgill.

John Holladay's will was recorded on 14 November 1817 in Will Book AA, page 84, Sumter District, South Carolina. The supplied life dates give his death as 14 September 1817 in Sumter District, Craven County, South Carolina; Revolutionary War abstract material instead states that he died before 30 December 1817 in Sumter District, South Carolina.

Historical context

John's lifetime encompassed the American Revolutionary era. The supplied service abstract identifies him as a South Carolina soldier in the 4th Regiment. His 1812 will also documents a household and estate that included land, tools, furniture, debts, and enslaved people; the names and distributions are retained here as part of the historical record.
