Marie "Marthe" Paquet

Marie “Marthe” Paquet, Barbara’s fifth great-grandmother, was born 4 May 1735 in the Pascagoula River area of present-day Mississippi. A Catholic baptismal record from Fort Conde at Mobile identifies her parents as Pierre Paquet and Magdeleine Baudrau and records her baptism on 5 April 1736. Family-tree material associates her with New Orleans, Cat Island, and Pascagoula; it also says that she was raised by her uncle, Michel Paquet. She was married first to Michel Jacques Gargaret and later to Jacob Hingle. Her death is estimated as about 1815 at Pascagoula, Jackson County, Mississippi.

Marie “Marthe” Paquet was born on 4 May 1735 in the Pascagoula River area of present-day Mississippi, the daughter of Pierre Paquet and Magdeleine Baudrau. Her baptism was recorded on 5 April 1736 at the Cathedral at Fort Conde in Mobile, in present-day Alabama. The record calls her Marie Marthe and identifies her parents as residents of LaBaye. It also identifies Magdeleine as the natural daughter of Sieur Bodraud dit Graveline.

The baptism was performed by Father Matthias, a Capuchin missionary apostolic priest serving as curé at Fort Conde of Mobile and vicar general of the Bishop of Quebec. Her named godparents were Sieur Bodraud dit Graveline and Marthe Baulot; Robert Falon and Marie Anne Grisse acted as proxy godparents. Family-tree notes describe Marie Marthe as Catholic and state that she was raised by her uncle, Michel Paquet, although no further details are provided.

About 1750, Marie Marthe reportedly married Michel Jacques Gargaret at Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. Their children are listed as Nicholas, Jean-Baptiste, Michel, Marie-Anne, Pierre, and Marthe Gargaret.

On 4 May 1769, she married Jacob Hingle. Their children are listed as Peter Jacob, Françoise, and Therese Hingle.

Family-tree notes associate Marie Marthe with New Orleans, Cat Island, and Pascagoula. She is said to have died about 1815 in Pascagoula, Jackson County, Mississippi.
