Jean Baptiste Baudreau, identified in the supplied family-tree notes as Jean Baptiste Baudrau III, was born 14 September 1736 in the West Pascagoula area. A baptismal entry dated 3 November 1736 records that Father Jean Francois, pastor of Fort Conde of Mobile, the Pascagoulas, and their dependencies, supplied the ceremonies of baptism for Jean Baptiste. The record calls him the legitimate son of Jean Baudreau (II) and Catherine Chenet, identified there as Vinconneau. His godparents were Jean Baptiste Baudreau and Marie-Josephe Simon dit LaPointe.

His parents’ marriage record, dated 1 March 1734 at Pascagoula, identifies his father as Jean Baptiste Baudrau, a Creole of Dauphin Island and son of Jean Baptiste Baudrau dit Graveline and Suzanne. It identifies his mother as Marie Catherine Vinconnau of La Rochelle, daughter of the late Louis Vinconnau and Catherine Doussin. The marriage took place at the Pascagoula home of Joseph Simon dit la Pointe.

Jean Baptiste died in 1803. The supplied notes identify Genevieve Baudrau as his daughter. Genevieve married Charles Leblanc in 1783, and their son Joseph, born in 1788, was later known as St. Cyr Seymour. Family and local-history notes connect subsequent Seymour descendants with the north shore of Graveline Lake and later settlements at Biloxi Latimer, Fort Bayou, Ocean Springs, and North Biloxi.

Jean Baptiste Baudreau is in Barbara’s family branch. The supplied relationship path runs through his daughter Marie Angelique Baudreau, then Emanuel I Bang, Emmanuel Bang, Matilda Bang, Ruby Armena Maples, and Doris Helen Sherrell.

Historical context

The baptism was recorded during the colonial period, when the pastor of Fort Conde of Mobile also served Pascagoula and dependent communities. The family records use French colonial naming forms, including Baudreau or Baudrau and the dit name Graveline. Later local-history notes describe Seymour descendants near Graveline Lake as subsistence farmers and stockmen.
